Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

It is important to set goals, as they increase commitment, provide focus and can even boost self-esteem. Remember, goals are goals for a reason – they are things you strive for. That being said, goals should be realistic, you can always set new goals once you’ve accomplished a previous one! The best way to set goals is to follow the S.M.A.R.T. framework. S.M.A.R.T. goals are – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely.

Consider the following as you set your goal

Make your goal as Specific as possible
Define as much as possible:

  • Who’s involved? Maybe just you
  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • Where will it be done?
  • Why are you doing this?
  • What are any requirements or constraints?

Make your goal Measurable so you know when the goal is achieved
Establish criteria to measure progress so you know when the goal is achieved. Examples include:

  • Pounds lost
  • Clothing size down
  • Muscle mass gained

Make sure your goal is Achievable given your current circumstance
Make sure your goal is attainable. Consider the following:

  • How are you going to accomplish this goal?
  • Given constraints, such as time or financial factors, how realistic is this goal?
  • What are any requirements or constraints?

Make your goal Relevant to your needs
Your goal must matter to you. It should align with other goals in your life and be something you are willing and able to work toward:

  • Is it worthwhile?
  • Is now the right time?
  • Are you going to prioritize this goal?
  • What are any requirements or constraints?

Make your goal Time-bound
Give your goal a deadline to action against. If necessary, even include intermediate milestones. By being time-bound, you’re better able to:

  • Hold yourself accountable against progress
  • Keep yourself on track

Example

I will lose 5lbs or go down at least one dress size so that I can easily fit into a size 4 or shimmy my way into a size 2 by my birthday, January 23rd – if I’m going to be 30 and single, I better look damn good!  I will do this by cutting out / significantly reducing the amount of processed foods, carbs and soda currently in my diet, and increase my intake of proteins, vegetables and water. I will make changing my lifestyle a priority; I will make the extra effort eat dinner by 8pm, even if working late at the office, and will research healthy food options ahead of time when on a traveling project. During this time, I will also start working out at least 3 days a week for 30 minutes.
